CISC 834 Syntax Systems for Natural Languages - 2005 Winter

Email: xiao@cs.queensu.ca

Abstract:

Different grammars have been formalized since Chomsky derived the Chomsky hierarchy of languages. The original idea of using grammars to generate natural languages has been practised in field for years. In this survey, we try to explore a series of grammars formalized from context-free grammars in addition to provide extra descriptive power for natural language processing. We concentrate on global indexed grammars [4] [5] which is the newest invention. In order to understand global indexed grammars, we also investigate indexed grammars and the extension - linear indexed grammars. We compare these three types of grammars with different examples. Throughout the studies, we unveil the NLP problems and challenges from grammar formalism perspective, and try to understand various generalizations systematically.
