CIAA 2004 formal proceedings in Springer LNCS series

As announced during the conference, the revised papers for the CIAA 2004 formal proceedings in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series are due by September 1, 2004. The page limit is Please send the following files by e-mail to : Also required are signed copyright forms (PDF, 10Kb). Please send the forms to Kai Salomaa by fax: +1 (613) 533-6513.
The papers need to be prepared according to Springer LNCS styles. The file typeinst.pdf contains the principal instructions. Please observe the following additional rules:
  1. The following LaTeX packages may be used:
algorithm, algorithmic, amsfonts, amsmath, amssymb, amstext, bm, epsf, graphics, graphicx, hyperref, latexsym, multicol, psfig, shadow, verbatim
The use of the following LaTeX packages is tolerated, though not encouraged:
    eepic, epic
No other LaTeX packages are allowed.
  2. LaTeX internal commands must not be redefined.
  3. All new LaTeX commands defined in the paper should be used somewhere. Please remove the definitions of all unused commands.
  4. Please refrain from defining LaTeX commands with very short names. The same applies to labels.
  5. Direct formatting commands, such as \small, \scriptsize, \hspace, \vspace etc., may be used only if absolutely necessary. It is prohibited to use such commands for the purpose of fitting more text within the page limit.
  6. There should be no overfull boxes in the document. Please check the .log file created by LaTeX for error messages of the following type:

It would be very good if there are also no underfull boxes.
  7. All figures should preferrably be in the EPS format. Each should be embedded in the text using an \includegraphics or an \epsfig command located within a {figure} environment. All pictures produced in any other way should be converted to EPS and then embedded using the standard method.

The standard LaTeX figures (\begin{picture} ... \end{picture}) form the only exception; in most cases we will be able to process them, though it is still recommended to convert these figures to EPS.

  8. If it is not at all possible to provide all figures in the EPS format, please contact us (we shall have to redraw them).
Please note that these guidelines are based upon our actual experience of making the CIAA pre-proceedings. Deviations from these rules sometimes forced us to print the author's PS file, scan a portion of the text, save it in the EPS format and then embed it into the document. Although this approach generally works, it does not meet the quality standards of LNCS, and hence cannot be used for the final proceedings.
