About Eudora Announcer

When Eudora receives new mail Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 gets automagically notified by Eudora. Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 will tell you the sender and the subject of the new messages using the Speech Manager (as part of Apple PlainTalk).

Getting Eudora Announcer

You can download Eudora Announcer from the Info-Mac archives.

Installation

This little applet should be dropped in the Startup Items Folder of the active System Folder. After startup, the applet will run in the background. The first time you run it, you will get a dialog asking you where your Eudora application is. Find it on your hard disk and press the return key. Make sure you do not also put an alias to Eudora in your Startup Items Folder, since launching Eudora before Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 might cause problems during the shutdown sequence of your Mac. Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 will launch Eudora automagically at startup time. Before you install Eudora Announcer 2.1.3, check the requirements below.

System Requirements

PlainTalk, Eudora 1.5.1 or better (it's a good idea to upgrade anyway), Applescript, Jon's Commands OSAX, Gestalt OSAX and Speech OSAX (part of Script Tools package), Macintosh Computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Eudora keeps trying to notify Announcer eventhough I don't want to use it anymore.

A: Eudora Announcer never signed out of Eudora. This can happen due to a system crash.

-IF YOU'RE NOT A SCRIPT WIZARD: Create a new Eudora settings file to replace the old one.
-IF YOU REALLY THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING: Clear all 'ENot' resources from your Eudora settings file using ResEdit and save.

Q: When new mail arrives, Eudora tries to run the script editor, not Announcer.

A: **DO NOT** run Eudora Announcer from the script editor: you need to know how Eudora works before attempting that. You will mess up your Eudora settings file: Eudora will start notifying Script Editor rather than Eudora Announcer. If you're already experiencing problems because of this, do the following:

-IF YOU'RE NOT A SCRIPT WIZARD: Create a new Eudora settings file to replace the old one.
-IF YOU REALLY THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING: Clear all 'ENot' resources from your Eudora settings file using ResEdit and save.

Q: Eudora Announcer starts up, says ready to announce messages, but that's all I ever hear it say.

A:

1) Try opening the script in Script Editor, change all references to "Eudora" into "whatever", during compilation you will get a dialog asking you where "whatever" is. Select your Eudora app, and save. Now make sure to set the custom icon bit using resedit, or you'll lose the lipstick icon.

2) Applescript changes the script occasionally when it can't find certain OSAXs. The problem might be related to the String Commands osax which is needed. It should be standard installed on your system. Please get the standard OSAXs from Apple. When you try again after installing the String Commands osax, please try it with a freshly downloaded copy of the Eudora Announcer, since the old copy might no longer work (Applescript Black Magic Lesson no. 1).

Q: I have the following error: "ttsc" doesn't understand the "event ScTlGest" or "event ScTlSpek" message.

A: The Gestalt OSAX is missing, which is part of Script Tools. Download it from Info-Mac archives. When you try again after installing the osax, please try it with a freshly downloaded copy of the Eudora Announcer, since the old copy might no longer work (Applescript Black Magic Lesson no. 1).

Q: I get the following message "Ready to announce messages" doesn't understand the "event ScTiSpeak" message.

A: The Speech OSAX is missing, which is part of Script Tools. Download it from Info-Mac archives. When you try again after installing the osax, please try it with a freshly downloaded copy of the Eudora Announcer, since the old copy might no longer work (Applescript Black Magic Lesson no. 1).

Q: I don't have the Gestalt OSAX but still want to use this applet.

A: If you are a Script Hacker, and you do not want to install Jon's Commands or the Gestalt OSAX, you can remove the designated parts of the Eudora Announcer 2.1.3 Script. For the Gestalt OSAX, remove the lines in the script between the comment -- REMOVE these lines if... and the --end REMOVE comment
