Bio: Dr. Rongxing Lu is a Full Professor in the School of Computing at Queen’s University. He previously served as Acting Director of the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) and held the Mastercard IoT Research Chair at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), where he was also a Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science. Prior to joining UNB, he was a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore (2013–2016), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Waterloo (2012–2013). Dr. Lu received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Professor Sherman Shen, where he was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal, the highest academic distinction at the doctoral level. He is an IEEE Fellow whose research focuses on IoT and big data security, privacy-enhancing technologies, and applied cryptography. A highly cited scholar, he has an H-index of 98 and over 45,300 citations on Google Scholar (as of June 2026), and has received ten Best Paper and Best Student Paper awards at leading journals and international conferences. Dr. Lu has demonstrated sustained leadership within the research community. He served as Chair of the IEEE Communications Society Communications and Information Security Technical Committee (CIS-TC) from 2022 to 2023 and is the founding Co-Chair of the IEEE TEMS Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers Technologies Technical Committee (BDLT-TC). He was appointed an IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer for 2024–2025. His early-career achievements were recognized with the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award (2013), and more recently, he received the 2026 Technical Recognition Award from the IEEE Communications and Information Security Technical Committee (CISTC). In addition to his research excellence, he is a dedicated educator and a two-time recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award (2016–2017, 2023–2024) at UNB.
Description of Queen's PET Lab: The Privacy Enhancing Techniques (PET) lab is dedicated to advancing the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of secure and privacy-preserving data systems. Our mission is to enhance security and user privacy across emerging computational environments, including applied cryptography, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and artificial intelligence, through innovative research and development. We are committed to safeguarding digital trust by designing robust and communication-efficient security solutions that provide comprehensive privacy protections for eHealthcare data, smart grid communications, connected and autonomous vehicle ecosystems (VANETs), and blockchain platforms. At the PET Lab, we pioneer new cryptographic tools and provably secure protocols to thwart advanced cyber threats, eliminate information leakage vectors, and resolve security-utility trade-offs, enabling the secure sharing and analysis of sensitive datasets. Our team has developed state-of-the-art frameworks in local differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, and secure, explainable federated learning, contributing significantly to the future of AI safety and data-driven infrastructures. We actively engage with the academic community and strive to influence and shape the global cybersecurity landscape.
